The last spray often determines the quality of the harvest

When growers think about successful crop protection, most attention is usually given to choosing the right plant protection product. While product selection is certainly important, the final weeks before harvest often prove that application quality is just as critical as the product itself. As fruit approaches maturity, the crop becomes increasingly vulnerable. Fungal diseases, rot and late-season pests can spread rapidly under favourable weather conditions. At this stage, even small untreated areas within the canopy may become the starting point for infections that reduce fruit quality, shorten storage life or lower market value. For this reason, the objective of the last spray is not to apply more product, but to ensure that every part of the canopy receives sufficient coverage.

Uniform coverage makes the difference

Dense canopies present a significant challenge for every sprayer. Leaves and branches often shield the inner parts of the tree or vine, making it difficult for spray droplets to reach all target surfaces.

The result is familiar to many growers

•    the outside of the canopy receives sufficient coverage,

•    while the interior remains partially untreated.

These untreated areas can become ideal conditions for disease development, even when the correct product and application rate have been used. A successful final treatment therefore depends on uniform droplet distribution throughout the entire canopy, not simply on the volume of spray mixture applied.

Airflow is just as important as spray volume

Many operators focus primarily on nozzle selection or pressure settings. However, in orchard and vineyard spraying, airflow is often the factor that determines how effectively droplets penetrate the canopy.

A well-balanced air stream:

•    carries droplets deep into the canopy,

•    improves coverage on both sides of leaves,

•    reduces untreated zones,

•    minimises excessive spray deposits on the outer canopy.

This not only improves disease control but also increases the efficiency of every litre of spray solution.

Precision instead of higher application rates

Increasing spray volume is not always the answer. Without proper airflow and droplet distribution, additional product often remains on the outer leaves or reaches the ground instead of the target surfaces.

Modern crop protection is increasingly based on application precision rather than application quantity. Better coverage allows growers to make full use of the chosen plant protection product while reducing unnecessary losses.

Designed for uniform application

This is exactly the principle behind the AGP PRO air-blast sprayer range.

Its carefully engineered airflow system is designed to deliver a uniform air distribution across the entire canopy, helping droplets penetrate dense foliage while reducing untreated "dead zones." The balanced air stream improves coverage of both the outer and inner canopy, allowing growers to achieve more consistent protection throughout the orchard or vineyard.

Whether working in vineyards or modern fruit orchards, the goal remains the same: every leaf, every cluster and every fruit should receive the protection it needs.

As harvest approaches, there are no second chances. The quality of the final spray often becomes the quality of the final harvest.
